Who is that masked man? The FBI thinks he might be an American jihadist who starred in an Islamic State propaganda video last month.

The FBI on Tuesday sought the public's help in identifying the English-speaking Islamic State fighter with what sounds like "a North American accent." The agency posted a short clip of the original, 55-minute video released Sept. 19, which concludes with the purported executions of Syrian soldiers taken prisoner. The video does not show the killings, but the mass murders were reported by news agencies.

"We're hoping that someone might recognize this individual and provide us with key pieces of information," said Michael Steinbach, assistant director of the FBI's Counterterrorism Division. "No piece of information is too small."

The FBI also wants information on Americans who have either left to fight with the Islamic State or other overseas terror groups, or have returned recently. FBI Director James Comey says he believes about a dozen Americans are fighting in Syria with the Islamic State, also known as ISIL.

The FBI appeal came three days after a 19-year-old suburban Chicago man was arrested as he allegedly prepared to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State.

Mohammed Hamza Khan, a U.S. citizen from Bolingbrook, Ill., was arrested Saturday at O'Hare International Airport as he prepared to board a flight to Vienna en route to Turkey.

The mystery man in the video is dressed in desert camouflage, wears a shoulder holster and brandishes a pistol. Addressing the camera, he "alternates seamlessly between English and Arabic in pro-ISIL pronouncements intended to appeal to a Western audience," the FBI said.

Last month, Comey said U.S. officials believed they had identified a masked Islamic State terrorist dubbed "Jihadi John" who appeared in videos of the beheadings of two American journalists and a British aid worker.

Comey did not release the name or nationality of the man, who speaks British-accented English.
