Two powerful tropical systems — Typhoon Vongfong and Tropical Cyclone Hudhud — are bearing down on Japan and India, respectively.
After lashing Okinawa Saturday, Vongfong is forecast to take direct aim at the Japanese mainland by early next week, the Joint Typhoon Warning Center predicted.
The potent typhoon, which has winds of 132 mph, will bring life-threatening conditions to Japan over the course of the next few days, according to AccuWeather.
"Destructive winds and flooding rain will be the top threats," said AccuWeather meteorologist Jim Andrews.
This week, Vongfong had winds of 180 mph, making it the most powerful storm on Earth this year.
Vongfong means "the wasp" in Cantonese.
India is bracing for the arrival of Tropical Cyclone Hudhud. The storm should hit the nation's east coast near Vizag on Sunday with winds as high as 115 mph, the Weather Channel predicted.
"Flooding rain and damaging winds will be possible," AccuWeather meteorologist Eric Leister said.
Hudhud is the first organized tropical system in the Bay of Bengal since the middle of May and is the second named cyclone of the northern Indian Ocean season, Leister said.
Typhoons and tropical cyclones are the same type of storms as hurricanes.
