At least five drones were spotted flying over central Paris landmarks during the night and police were unable to catch the operators. The sightings come at a time of heightened security following last month's jihadist attacks. Newslook
Drones were seen flying over landmarks in Paris for a second night in a row.
French media reported five sightings in the center of the city overnight between 11 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday.
They were seen near the Place de la Concorde, Les Invalides military museum, and along the river Seine near the Eiffel Tower or near several of the city's old gates, news agency AFP reported.
The night before, at least five drones flew over the Eiffel Tower, the U.S. Embassy and other landmarks, authorities said. There have been several mysterious drone overflights around France in recent months.
An investigation is underway into who was operating the drones, and why. Some of the latest drone flights were captured on film and will be analyzed by investigators, the BBC reported. Such flights are banned over Paris skies.
French authorities have said the drones currently present no threat, but the government is trying to find ways to counteract the devices. Some fear they could be spying on technology or could one day be equipped with weapons.
Drone operator Jean-Luc Fournier, who has consulted on French drone legislation, said authorized operators condemn such rogue flights because it casts the whole industry in a bad light.
He said such flights raise tension, with Paris already on edge after deadly terrorist attacks last month by Islamic radicals.
Seventeen people were killed in the attacks on satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo and at a kosher supermarket, which also saw a policewoman fatally shot in the street.
The first issue of Charlie Hebdo since a "survivor's issue" published a week after the attack on the paper hit newsstands Wednesday.
