Dozens of bodies were found under the Monoprix Supermarket in Paris. The company called in researchers to inspect the ground underneath where a hospital once existed from the 12th century to the 17th. Newslook
More than 200 carefully laid-out skeletons have been found in a series of mass graves under a supermarket in Paris.
The discovery was made under the Monoprix store on the Boulevard Sebastopol, in the center of the French capital, where the medieval Trinity hospital's cemetery once stood. By Monday, the archaeologists called to inspect the site before building work was carried out had discovered 229 skeletons.
Founded in the 12th century, the hospital became an orphanage in the 16th century. It was closed during the French Revolution and demolished at the end of the 18th century.
Solène Bonleu, from France's Institute of Preventative Archeological Research, told the Guardian: "We had expected to find a few human remains as we knew it was a former hospital cemetery, but nothing like as many as we have found. We've come across hospital cemeteries before, notably in Marseilles and Troyes, but it's the first discovery of its kind in Paris."
So far, eight mass graves have been discovered – seven of which held between five and 20 bodies – while the eighth grave had more than 150 skeletons. Inrap believes the deaths were caused by an unknown crisis.
Isabelle Abadie, who is leading the dig, told the Guardian: "What is astonishing is that the bodies were not thrown in, but put there with care and in an organized way. The individuals — men, women and children, were placed head-to-toe, no doubt to save space.
"It suggests there were a lot of sudden deaths, but we still have to find the cause of this sudden fatal event and whether it was an epidemic, fever, famine."
Inrap said the remains do not show signs of any diseases or injuries, and DNA testing is underway to determine the cause of the deaths.
